Kudzu: a root that nurtures your digestion from deep within

Digestive Health and Microbiota
The kudzu root (also known as kuzú) is one of nature’s quiet treasures — gentle yet profoundly healing for the digestive system.

🌱 What is kudzu?

Kudzu is a natural starch extracted from roots that grow several meters underground. Its traditional preparation is meticulous: the roots are ground, repeatedly washed with mountain water, and then air-dried for about three months.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, kudzu is considered a neutral food, meaning it harmonizes and strengthens without producing internal heat or cold. It helps restore inner balance when the digestive system is irritated or weakened.

💫 Properties and benefits

Kudzu works gently, yet deeply. Its main benefits include:

✅ Regenerating mucous membranes — digestive, respiratory, and even skin.

✅ Relieving burning, acidity, and gastric inflammation.

✅ Regulating intestinal transit, especially helpful in cases of diarrhea.

✅ Reducing inflammation and protecting cells thanks to its antioxidant flavonoids.

Because of these properties, kudzu is ideal in cases of gastritis, reflux, irritable bowel, diarrhea, or mild intestinal inflammation, and during stressful periods that affect digestion.

🍵 How to prepare it

Preparing kudzu is simple — almost like a small ritual of care:

  1. Dissolve one heaping teaspoon of kudzu in a little cold water.
  2. Add more water until you have about one cup (200 ml) in total.
  3. Heat over low flame, stirring constantly until it becomes clear and slightly thick (about 3 minutes).
  4. You can drink it as is, or add half a teaspoon of umeboshi paste, a Japanese fermented plum that enhances its alkalizing and detoxifying effect.

Drink it warm, as a healing internal tonic that soothes from the very first sip.

🕊️ When to take it

  • During active digestive symptoms: 3–4 times a day.
  • For maintenance or prevention: once daily, preferably on an empty stomach.

Its mild taste and calming action make it ideal even for the most sensitive digestions.

🌸 Kudzu with umeboshi: the perfect match

When kudzu is combined with umeboshi, their effects amplify. Umeboshi — a traditional Japanese fermented plum — is rich in organic acids, minerals, and enzymes that support detoxification and body alkalinization. Together, they form a drink that repairs, balances, and restores the digestive axis, working on the stomach, intestines, and nervous system.

✨ A simple way to care for yourself

Bringing kudzu into your daily life is a small yet powerful act — helping your body repair what stress, haste, or modern diets have disrupted. It’s gentle, natural, and effective, a reminder that caring for your digestion means caring for your whole being.
